Asian Carp Crisis vs. B.P.Oil Spill Crisis 2010
From the Bottom of my heart, I dedicate this article to the men and women whose lives have been lost in oil well accidents, Eleven people died when the B.P. oil platform exploded on April 20th 2010. And to their families, and all the families in the United States that are emotionally and financially effected by the B.P. Oil Spill and The Asian Carp Crisis.
Are you wondering how can these two catastrophic environmental issues be compared?
Before I answer the lead question, I’ll tell you about a major decision I’ve made. I’ve decided to raise the level of importance of the Asian Carp invasion to a CRISIS level. The longer time goes by without stopping the advancement of the Asian Carp the level of danger is raised. I will from now on be calling this issue the “Asian carp Crisis,” until the advanced migration of the Asian carp is stopped
How did I arrive at this decision? It is like a war against the Asian Carp. It is a battle we need to fight against. But the Asian carp are advancing as we live and breathe daily. They are continuing to attack the environment we live in. And they are destroying the fresh water ecosystems that we need for very basic survival of human life on planet earth. Our United States Governments, local, State and Federal are taking no action to stop the exploding population of this invasive, environment destroying, life sucking species.
What are we as a society doing to combat this Crisis? My opinion is we are doing nothing to stop the advancement of the destructive Asian carp. Three times the U.S. Congress has been asked to take action on this issue, and three times they have refused to take action. The state of Michigan joined with other surrounding states to ask Congress to close off the flow of water between Lake Michigan and the Illinois River.
The Asian carp have been migrating north from the Deep South since 1970. They have migrated up the Mississippi River 1,506 Miles. Asian Carp have migrated northerly from the mouth of the Illinois River 273 miles to the Des Plaines River and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship canal. The distance from the Illinois River to Lake Michigan, through the Chicago ship and sanitary canal is only 28 miles. But if you go through the Cal-Sag canal it is only 15 miles to Lake Michigan.
And the Army Corp of Engineers is leading the American citizens to believe that Asian Carp have not migrated into Lake Michigan. I am insulted by the Army Corp and the US Congress that they think I will believe Asian Carp have not already advanced to Lake Michigan by way of the Chicago Ship and Sanitary canals. I will not stick my head in the sand, put on blinders and let the Asian Carp continue to destroy the beauty and bounty of the Great lakes that represent 30% of the fresh water that is on our planet. I believe the Asian Carp Crisis was created by The Environmental Protection Agency and they are continuing to try to cover that up. And worse than that, they are failing to take action to stop what is happening.
The continued lack to take action will ultimately devastate The 7 Billion dollar annual sport and commercial fishing industry of Lake Michigan. The Same devastation will be imposed on the rest of the Great Lakes, If we do not take Action Now to stop the Asian Carp population from exploding into Lake Michigan.
But what about the comparable devastating B.P. (British Petroleum) oil spill disaster also happening as I write this?
How does this compare to the Asian Carp Crisis?
There are 3 Short answers:
# 1 They are both disasters of epic proportion! http://hubpages.com/hub/Asian-Carp-Invasion-Resolution-Step-By-Step
# 2 They both will leave a void in our society and economy ! http://hubpages.com/hub/Water-Traffic-or-Asian-Carp-Who-will-Decide
# 3 They both are devastating to our environment ! http://hubpages.com/hub/Water-Traffic-or-Asian-Carp-Who-will-Decide
Our Federal, State and local governments have allowed oil companies to drill off shore for oil. This is a good this for our country. But there is not a plan to cap an oil rig collapse at sea? Why was there not a very specific, documented plan to attack this type of accident? I am insulted again by Government! They will strictly enforce U.S. citizens to pay their income taxes, whether you have a job, or not. But there is no plan to avoid the largest environmental disaster in history? And the company and responsible owners continue to make multi-Billions annually and will get every possible tax break they can to pay less income tax as well. What is wrong with this picture?
The BP oil company is allowing 210,000 gallons of crude oil a day to dump into the ocean waters in the Gulf of Mexico about 40 miles off the shores and beautiful beaches of Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabmama, Florida, and Texas. The oil is devastating bird life. The area where the oil slick is coming ashore is one of the largest fish and wildlife refuges in the world.
The spilled oil is devastating the shrimp population. The shrimp fishing has been stopped (By Law). Shrimp fishing is one of the largest sources of income on the Gulf coast. All crab fishing has been halted (By Law).
All other forms of commercial fishing have been ordered to stop (By Law). Shrimp, fish and other sea life are being contaminated with the crude oil. And if humans ingest any of those contaminated species, they too could become very ill or even die.
It is devastating the endangered species of sea turtles. The oil is damaging the population of whales, squid, jellyfish, pelicans, dolphins, drum fish, tuna, crabs, and virtually every living form of life that comes into contact with.
What are the effects of this tragedy? Short term effects are higher food prices for the food that is harvested in the Gulf of Mexico. There is also a huge loss of income for the businesses in the Gulf of Mexico that rely on the fishing industry for supporting their families. Billions of dollars will be spent on cleaning up the oil.
The long term effects are certainly financial devastating for the gulf coast area. If the ecosystem is able to recover it will take many decades. But the truth is that the environment in the Gulf of Mexico may never recover to be as productive as it was. I believe there is no way to figure the huge dollar amount of damage done economically or environmentally, and emotionally. Do you think B.P. is hiding some things ? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/05/7-secrets-bp-doesnt-want_n_563102.html
But what I can say for sure is that the epic proportion of this BP oil disaster could have been prevented.
And also the epic disaster we face with the Asian Carp Crisis can be avoided at this time. But in the near future the Asian Carp Crisis will explode into Lake Michigan if we do not take action now

Hi Ron, well written and always you have a good cause, your dedication is amazing. I wish that the government should heed the call and focus more attention on environmenatl issues as it needs attention specifically disasters like the oil spill and the imminent danger of the carps. (Sorry I didnt mention Asian with the carp, just carp, hehe,)
Thumbs up, and take care, Maita
I fish Lake Erie from Erie,Pennsylvania. I am with you on this crisis. Can you imagine loosing the perch or the Steelhead Trout in our lakes. I will join you in this undertaking and become a Fan of yours and I invite you become a Fan of mine. Fish On !!
Great article Ron. The Federal Gov. is not going to take action unless their is a public outcry which can be started by the news media. But in this case the news media is in bed with the federal government. FOX is the only news media that will stand up to the Feds.
Government should take action on it, Sad story regarding the BP oil spill,I think of those whose depended on the aqua industries and how their sources of income would be affected.as well as our environment will be affected .
We humans seem to be doing all we can to destroy the planet. Enjoyed the read!
Greed has all but destroyed our beautiful Gulf Coast. The BP disaster has caused the eyes of the world to focus on an issues which has always been known here in Louisiana: 1). Lack of offshore drilling safety and 2). destruction of our natural habitats. Thank you for bringing this to the attention of so many through your writing.
Ron, thank you for your kind comments. Pinkboxer is back!
Great hub with a sad, but awesome comparison of two ways that man has had direct influence in destroying our eco-system at a crisis level. I for one was shocked to hear that 20 years after the Enron spill we still have not recovered from that incident. Thanks for keeping us informed on the carp situation. Rating up!:)
Hi, Ron, I had never heard about the carp before, but I have been watching with sadness over the oil spill. Evidently they have tried to cap it, but it formed some sort of chrystals on the actual tap, and now they cannot use it. As we all agree, they should make sure that they have sufficient technology before they do oil rigs to make sure it can be stopped. thanks nell
rprcarz50, Firstly, A RATE UP and I'm sharing this with every networking avenue available to me! Your so wonderful to keep marching on with this cause and awareness. Awareness of the Asian Carp Crisis is VITAL, so to all reading this please...
SHARE THIS ASIAN CARP CRISIS report!
It amazes me the BP company was allowed to operate without proven procedures in place for such an explosion. Why aren't these rigs monitored? We are after all in the midst of a Global Oil War! Ugh, I'm for PEACE, do think PEACE everyone! Ron, I will maintain every positive thought, hope, prayer and affirmation that you be RADICALLY and Abundantly Blessed so that you may wage on with your campaign to Promote PEACE to our waters! Blessing my friend and now I'm off to share this vital information! Thanks and Peace :)
Ron, The Asian Carp Crisis vs BP Oil Spill of 2010 hub brings to my attention how much work there is that needs to be done. Oil spills, asian carp, bad things happening on the border, and a president that would rather say we are sorry. Thanks for the insights and I will spread the word of your Hub to all that will listen. Hub up...
Shortsightedness...I guess? I have to assume that is why there isn't more outcry over environmental disasters and crises. Things like this have often been overlooked until the people put pressure on the government. Unfortunately too many people don't see why the environment matters, they think short term. Why should we spend money worrying about a bunch of fish? At least with the oil spill, people can see that people's livelihoods are at stake. It makes it more immediate and concrete. (Darn it, we need that oil and the jobs associated with it. But if was just a bunch of aquatic life dying, so what?) Shortsighted. I applaud your efforts; getting people to understand the true consequences is a tough battle.
Ron I did have a vague knowledge of this crisis. But I had no Idea that it had reached such epic proportions . Thank you for making me aware and I intend to follow up by reading your other hubs on this. Thanks and have a good day my friend
Ron, I am 100% behind you on this issue. As a sport fisherman of Lake Michigan and a life long resident on the shores of Lake Michigan, the Asian Carp issue is a huge crisis that our government seems to be turning a blind eye towards. As usual, it appears money out ways environment. The Great Lakes are a natural wonder that we as residents have been fighting to protect since I can remember.
I applaud anyone willing to make noise on this issue and make sure our elected politicians are aware of the peoples voice.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart for your dedication on the Asian Carp crisis.
Good articles, dad. :)
I keep thinking that this oil spill could have been prevented. And don't you love the way they point the blame on someone else.
The BP situation, in particular, I find devastating. I wish there was a way to avoid this sort of thing. The reality is that you really can't. The only good news is that these oil spill events are few and far between. Still devastating, but not really all that frequent.
As for the Asian carp thing, I have been hearing quite a lot about these fish lately.
I was talking to a friend the other day about this, so glad you popped in on me today reminded me I need to copy this link and share with my e list! Keep on RON! Peace :)
A very important hub - European Carp has also done a similar 'invasion' in Australia with the crucial Murray Darling River basin and network. The problems have been intensified because of the drought years. If you snooze on this then we are in serious environmental damage mode America.
Possibly, overfishing of carp should be encouraged. Toss back everything else. Carp Derby Day (or year) might help promote local business and the sport fishing industry. Just a thought.
The tragedy BP oil is one of many incidents that destroy the ecosystem,I am sure not just you who frustrated about this but many other as well, like human too those carp migrate and start a life!I never realise rigger also being involved!I truly enjoyed this!thanks for sharing!
I say fried Asian Carp with a little veggies for all!
Yes, if Congress put into most bills or issues what they put into the ones that give them pay increases, we'd be ina finer state to be sure on myriad fronts. Unfortunately the important issues often are overlooked by our elected officials.
Well, I am a submarine pilot working out here to plug up this oil spill, and while I agree with some of what you say, I also know that you are leaping to some conclusions too. I spend close to 12 hours a day at the sea floor working at the oil well, and the funny thing is, wild life is everywhere, the water is still as blue and clean as can be and we had a shark along side the ship today doing whatever sharks do. While I cannot attest to the oil along shore - I am not there nor involved in that clean-up, but I can attest for the clean-up here at the well, and while yes it is still spewing away, I can tell you everyone here cares very much about it, and is working 24hours a day around the clock to stop it - the problem is - its a mile below the surface. Do you know how hard it is to work a mile below the surface of the water?
I don't think this disaster is going to be as bad as they want you to believe it is. I am not saying it wont be bad, but I am saying we have a lot of technology in oil spill clean-up that we have never had before, and right here where that oil rig sank, the water is as blue and crystal clear as can be - it is also the same at the bottom where the well is. Why? Because of the boats sucking the oil up almost faster than it is spewwing out and the oil eating bacteria are working wonders too.
And while we are out there cleaning up so much more than you can begin to imagine, I fear it will make little difference because the oil that spilled in the beginning that comes ashore, will do more bad PR to the situation than the 100 times as much oil we have cleaned up out here since. You will never know what all BP has done to fix this. Trust me if they were doing nothing, the Gulf Coast Shoreline would be 4 feet thick with oil already. As it as, they have moved very fast and effective in getting action out here on this problem. And not to mention, it was a freak accident, its not like they did it maliciously. There are over 4000 of these wells out here, this was just one accident with how many wells in how many years? While I agree that one accident is too many, it is still a good ratio. It's better than most people's driving record. Don't throw them under the bus just yet, wait and see how their efforts pan out, this accident just may show the world how far we have come in clean-up technology and ability - if they are not too blinded by the TV news to see it.
And if the government takes over, you can bet the well will keep right on spilling for months to come. The deep sea professionals are here, this is what they do - keep Obama and friends away and let the oil pro's fix this. Because... what do they know about working in the deep sea? Nothing.
- Harlan
Harlan, it must be a difficult job, I commend you for working on this and sharing your side of the story.
good story. but do you think they will ever get it caped off?
Thanks for pointing out the trends wildlife can take. We often don't think of fish migrating as far as have the Asian carp. It really is quite astounding.
I think you either live close to Lake Michigan or just have a deep interest - I'm close to, so I hear much about the issue. Could you clarify a point for me: As I understand it, these are really silver carp, or big head carp, as even gold fish are asian carp. What don't I understand?
Thanks for your work in bringing the Asian carp crisis into the public eye.

Sad story regarding the BP oil spill. I think of those whose livelihood depended on the fishing industries and how their sources of income would be affected. Thanks for sharing.
